Climatic Testing

Reference Number: 360 Send me an email with the details of the next course.
The reliability of an engineering product is greatly influenced by its operating environment. During manufacture, transport, storage and service varying adverse climatic conditions may be experienced affecting both performance and survival capability. Simulation of these conditions under controlled laboratory conditions can both assist the design process and demonstrate that a product is fit-for-purpose.

Introduction

Modern sophisticated equipment is often required, not only to survive, but to operate to a defined standard under adverse climatic conditions. To demonstrate the survival capability and reliability of equipment it is necessary to simulate these conditions in the laboratory. This two-day course provides a practical introduction to Climatic Testing and will cover general principles, test facility requirements and practical test procedures. The design aspects of climatic test chambers will be covered to the depth necessary for the user to fully understand their operation. An important part of equipment usage is the measurement, recording and control of the various parameters, with emphasis on calibration, accuracy, repeatability and uncertainty of measurement. Comprehensive notes covering all the lectures will be provided and these serve as a valuable reference after the course.

Training Course Content

  • Basic atmospheric conditions
  • Temperature effects
  • Testing regimes and chamber considerations
  • Absolute and relative humidity
  • Measurement of temperature
  • Measurement of humidity

Who is this training course for?

  • Test engineers working in environmental test laboratories.
  • Those who have recently been recruited from other departments or branches of engineering.
  • Engineers concerned with reliability and type approval testing as part of design assurance work.

No prior knowledge of Climatic Testing is required. Mathematics will be kept to the minimum necessary for an understanding of the subject. This course has a practical format and although intended for engineers and technicians, there are no prerequisite educational requirements. Where a background knowledge is advised, this is specified in the appropriate literature. This course is not designed as undergraduate or postgraduate primer and is not available to full-time students.

About the Lecturer

Andy Tomlinson
CPD Dynamics

Picture of Andy Tomlinson the course Lecturer

Andy Tomlinson was a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University before starting his own company CPD Dynamics Limited. With over 25 years contract research experience in noise and vibration, specialising in signal processing techniques, his areas of interest include dynamic analysis procedures, machine noise diagnostics, signature identification and classification and vibration, climatic and shock testing. He has worked for Rank Precision Industries and his MPhil degree was carried out under contract with the Transport and Road Research Laboratory.
He is a Fellow of the Society of Environmental Engineers having served as Chairman of both Council and the Vibration, Shock and Noise Working Group. He is also a Chartered Engineer and member of the Institute of Acoustics, and the Engineering Integrity Society.
Andy runs short training courses on various subjects related to practical Signal Processing, Environmental Test Engineering and the measurement, analysis and control of Noise and Vibration. He has organised and participated in numerous in-company short courses both in the United Kingdom, and overseas.

Course Documentation

A full set of bound course notes is provided for each delegate. This is typically over 100 pages of material for a 2 day course. The notes include graphs, figures and diagrams with detailed explanations, similar in style to a short text book. Electronic copies of Powerpoint ® presentation material are not made available.
